Henry Monaghan

Henry Paul Monaghan (* 1934 ) is an American lawyer. He is a lawyer and constitutional attorney at the Columbia Law School of Columbia University in New York City . Here he holds the professorship for constitutional law named after Harlan Fiske Stone .

Monaghan earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1955 , a Bachelor of Laws from Yale Law School in 1958, and a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1960 . He has been a faculty member at Columbia Law School since 1984 .

Henry Monaghan argued in numerous cases before higher courts American states and the Supreme Court of the United States . He has also written extensive literature on constitutional law , the federal courts and administrative law of the United States . He is considered an expert on the legal significance of the First Amendment and the presidency .

In 1988 Monaghan was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 2018 he received - together with David L. Shapiro - the first Daniel J. Meltzer Award from the Association of American Law Schools (AALS).
