Henry Sturgis Morgan

Henry Sturgis Morgan Sr. (born October 24, 1900 in London , England , † February 8, 1982 in New York City , United States of America ) was an American banker and co-founder of Morgan Stanley . He was also President and Chairman of the Morgan Library & Museum .

Life

Youth and school education

Henry Sturgis Morgan Sr. was born to John Pierpont Morgan Jr. (1867–1913) and Jane Norton Grew Morgan (1868–1925). His father was the son of John Pierpont Morgan , one of the wealthiest Americans of his time and co-founder of Drexel, Morgan & Company (known as JP Morgan & Company from 1895 , as JP Morgan Chase since 2000 ). In addition to his brother, Junius Spencer Morgan, he also had two sisters, Jane Norton Morgan Pennoyer and Frances Tracy Morgan Nichols. Morgan attended the Groton School in the US state of Massachusetts and then graduated from Harvard University , a top American university . He completed this course in 1923.

Career

After Morgan graduated, he joined JP Morgan & Company . In 1929 he was appointed partner and served in this position until 1935. Through the Banking Act 1933 , which ensured that financial companies had to choose either their investment business or their deposit insurance, Morgan co-founded on September 5, 1935 a group of former JP Morgan partners created the investment bank Morgan Stanley . In addition to his role at Morgan Stanley , he was elected director of the General Electric Company in 1935 and of the Aetna Insurance Company in 1951.

Morgan was a trustee from 1924 to 1960 and, after his brother's death in 1960, President of the Morgan Library & Museum . In addition, he was trustee of the Museum of Modern Art (1954–1982).

Private life

On June 26, 1923 he married Catherine Frances Lovering Adams , with whom he had five sons (Henry Sturgis Jr., Charles Francis, Miles, John Adams and Peter Angus).

leisure

Morgan spent most of his free time with his passion for sailing. In 1949 he was elected first Commodore of the New York Yacht Club and headed the America's Cup selection committee until the mid-1970s . He also ran the North American Yacht Racing Union and played a leading role in founding the United States Sailing Association .
