Henry Wansbrough OSB (* 9. October 1934 in London as Joseph Wansbrough ) is an English Roman Catholic biblical scholars .

Life

Joseph Wansbrough was the son of Arthur George Wansbrough and Elizabeth Bertha nee Lewis. While the father, director of the Bank of England, came from a family of Anglican clergy, the mother was of Sephardic Jewish descent, but converted to the Roman Catholic Church as a youth. The parents divorced in 1938. Joseph grew up with his sister Miriam with their mother in Norfolk , later in Oxfordshire near Lechlade and was raised as a child by the nuns of St. Clothilde in Lechlade.

Wansbrough attended Ampleforth College (1948-1953) and was head boy there. From 1956 he studied classical philology and philosophy at Oxford University . In 1953 he joined the Benedictine convent of Ampleforth; In 1957 he made his profession . A study of Catholic theology at the University of Friborg followed. In Israel , Wansbrough learned Ivrit and studied at the École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem . In 1964 he was ordained a priest and returned to Ampleforth.

Wansbrough is best known as editor of the New Jerusalem Bible (1985) and author of several books on biblical subjects. He was Chairman of the Faculty of Theology at Oxford University and from 1990 to 2004 Masters at St Benet's Hall at the University. From 1985 to 1991 he was President of the Catholic Biblical Association of Great Britain; from 1997 to 2007 he was a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission .
