The village of Lechlade with 2,700 inhabitants east of Cirencester on the edge of the Cotswolds in the county of Gloucestershire is traditionally referred to as the beginning of the navigable Thames . Boat trips to London and the Thames Estuary often start at Halfpenny Bridge in Lechlade; the Thames path leads hikers not only to the mouth, but also to the source.

The River Leach and the River Coln flow into the Thames at Lechlade.
