Henry Wase Whitfield

Henry Wase Whitfield (* 1811 or 1814 , † March 30, 1877 in Dover ), Chinese 威菲 路, was a British general and commander of the armed forces of the United Kingdom in China , Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements .

Life

Henry W. Whitfield was appointed to the 2nd West India Regiment in 1828 , based in the Crown Colony of Hong Kong. He served in this infantry regiment for 40 years and commanded it for 15 years from 1843. He was then appointed from 1869 to 1874 as Lieutenant General Commander of the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom in China, Hong Kong and Straits Settlements ( Commander British Troops in China, Hong Kong, and the Straits Settlements ). Whitfield was also in April 1872 for a few days Governor of Hong Kong ( Commander and lieutenant governor ).

The barracks in Kowloon , Hong Kong, known as Whitfield Barracks , built from 1890 for the British garrison , bears his name.
