Life

Henry was the eldest of four sons of a German family that had lived in Russia for several generations. German was spoken at home and at school. He attended the historical-philological faculty of St. Petersburg University . In 1897, after serving as a one-year volunteer, he passed the officer's examination and became a reserve officer in a Russian dragoon regiment.

In 1898 Henry von Heiseler went to Munich to work as a volunteer with the founder of Munich Reinsurance Carl von Thieme . In the summer of 1899 he married his second eldest daughter Emy (1873-1960). The couple initially lived in Munich, where their son Erik was born in 1900 († 1937), and in 1906 rented the large old house in Vorderleiten, which belongs to the town of Brannenburg in the Inn Valley. The son and later writer Bernt von Heiseler was born there in 1907 . Henry bought the house in 1911 with funds made available by his father in Petersburg and had it remodeled. “Warmth, trust, the noblest domesticity, the kindest philanthropy and mature, rich spirituality ... What a house! What a host! ”Writes Johannes von Guenther in his introduction to Henry von Heiseler. From the estate (1929).

During a stay with his parents in Russia in 1914, this time on the occasion of the funeral of his father Paul and with his wife and children, he was forced to serve as an officer in the Tsar's army as a Russian subject. His wife brought the sons to Sweden in 1915, from where they moved on to Germany. She stayed with her husband in Russia until 1916. In 1917 he escaped the fate of other Tsarist officers who were shot because the soldiers he was popular with elected him battalion commander. Heiseler was remobilized for the Red Army and released from duty in the summer of 1921. After the death of his mother and brothers, he managed to escape aboard a German ship, where he escaped discovery and thus death despite multiple searches of the ship. On September 2nd he was back in Vorderleiten with his wife and sons.

In 1923 he took in the children of his brother Erich, who had died in June 1915, Boris, Tamara and Kira, and they grew up with his son Bernt von Heiseler , who later became a writer. Erich's wife, Nadezhda von Heiseler, stayed in Russia and later died as a result of the Leningrad blockade . Tamara (1911–1979), later the mother of Johannes Henrich von Heiseler , was the only one with her uncle Henry when he died after a brief illness on November 25, 1928, at the age of not yet 53 in Vorderleiten.
