Henryk Mückenbrunn (* 1903 in Zakopane ; † 1956 in Vallée Blanche ) was a Polish skier who competed for SN PTT Zakopane . He was a total of seven times Polish champion in Nordic skiing . In summer he was a mountaineer in the Tatra Mountains .

Career

Mückenbrunn, also known as "Miki", first competed in official ski jumping competitions in 1918 and was already junior champion in 1920 at the first Polish Union Championships on Mount Antałówka in Zakopane .

He achieved his first successes in the senior sector in 1922 when he was runner-up in cross-country skiing over 18 km. A year later he was able to win the Polish championships in this discipline. In 1923 Mückenbrunn jumped 38 m and thus set a new Polish record. However , he did not become Polish champion in ski jumping until a year later in Krynica-Zdrój , where he also became champion in Nordic combined for the first time . He was also the relay champion in cross-country skiing and in obstacle course .

At the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc , Mückenbrunn was on the start list, but an injury prevented his participation in the competition. This was a major setback for the Polish team, because he was actually considered the best and most versatile Polish skier. He was able to confirm his two championship titles in ski jumping and in Nordic combined again in Krynica-Zdrój in 1924 .

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1925 in Janské Lázně , Mückenbrunn took 44th place in ski jumping and cross-country skiing over 18 km. In the Nordic Combined he was the best Pole in 24th place.

In 1926 Mückenbrunn became the ski champion of Czechoslovakia in Nové Město na Moravě . The competitions took place from January 28 to 31, 1926 and included, among other things, 50 km of cross-country skiing as well as a competition in Nordic combined and ski jumping.

After the career

Mückenbrunn 1932

In 1926 Mückenbrunn emigrated to Chamonix , France , to avoid being drafted into the Polish military. In Chamonix he continued to be active in sports as a skier and mountaineer. He was able to win several prizes in skijoring , skiing, tobogganing and bobsleigh . He also became a ski instructor and even founded his own ski school.

In 1944 Mückenbrunn was arrested by the Gestapo because he was Jewish and active in the resistance. However, he managed to escape.

In 1956 Mückenbrunn died under mysterious circumstances. His body was found in March on the slopes of the Vallée Blanche valley in a crevasse. Mückenbrunn was buried in the Chamonix cemetery.
