Hephaestus is a specialist journal for archeology and related sciences. It is named after Hephaestus , the god of fire and the forge in Greek mythology .

In addition to the subtitle Critical Journal on Theory and Practice of Archeology and Related Sciences , the journal has also had the sub-title New Approaches in Classical Archeology and Related Fields since Volume 11/12 (1992/93) . The first two volumes were published by Moreland Edition in Bad Bramstedt , from 1981 it was published by Klartext-Verlag in Bremen, from 1997 by Camelion-Verlag Lüneburg, Kissing, Mering, Augsburg (volumes 13 to 26), from volume 27/2010 in Lit-Verlag Münster.

Hephaestus is today a journal affiliated to the Archaeological Institute of the University of Hamburg , but still editorially and financially independent, with considerable circulation, especially in the Anglo-American language area.

history

Hephaistos is an annual specialist journal in the field of classical archeology with a strong interdisciplinary and epistemological orientation , which was founded in 1979 by lecturers from the mid-level faculty and students of the Archaeological Institute of the University of Hamburg , which was independent of the then little tolerant official scientific establishment. The first volumes had more of a fanzine character in appearance, beyond all the merits in terms of content that are widely accepted today . Unexpected by the founders, the magazine has established itself over the years and, then as now, forms a forum for unfinished sketches and conceptual drafts; She places more value on the originality of the thoughts than on the technical perfection of detailed elaboration and illustration.
