Hans-Joachim Schalles

Hans-Joachim Schalles (born September 28, 1951 in Kassel ; † October 6, 2015 in Xanten ) was a German classical archaeologist and museum educator .

After school, the Abitur at the Katharineum in Lübeck and community service , Schalles began in 1972 to study classical archeology , ancient history and education at the University of Hamburg . In 1983 he was there with a thesis on “Investigations into the cultural policy of the Pergamene rulers in the 3rd century BC Chr. "PhD. From 1983 to 1985, Schalles was a scientific volunteer in the regional museum Xanten branch of the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn . A work contract and an ABM position at the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne followed there until 1987 . In 1987, Schalles was appointed head of the Xanten Regional Museum, which also included the post of Deputy Head of the Xanten Archaeological Park / Regional Museum complex. In 2012 he retired. In addition, Schalles held lectures at the Universities of Cologne and Hamburg.

From 1979 to 1995, Schalles was co-editor of the magazine Hephaistos . Between 1993 and 2000 he was regional representative of the International Association for the Study of Ancient Baths in German-speaking countries, and between 1997 and 2000 he was chairman of the Museum and Park Kalkriese museum advisory board . From 2000, Schalles was a member of the advisory board of the Saalburg Museum .
