Herb Morand

Herb Morand (* 1905 , † 23. February 1952 in New Orleans ) was an American trumpeter of oldtime jazz .

Morand began playing the trumpet at the age of eleven after listening to King Oliver . He then worked with Nat Towles in New Orleans , eventually moved to New York City and played there with his half-sister, the blues singer Lizzy Miles (1895-1963), and with Cliff Jackson . On his return to New Orleans he worked with his own band and with Chris Kelly , then moved to Chicago and in 1929 became a member of the Beale Street Washboard Band alongside Johnny Dodds . From 1935 to 1938 he played with the Harlem Hamfats , where he also appeared as a soloist. With this ensemble he recorded blues , New Orleans-style jazz and swing, even country music . In 1941 Morand moved back to New Orleans, where he led his own formation; from 1948 to 1950 he was a member of George Lewis' band . He recorded under his own name for American Music in 1949/50 , but then withdrew from the music scene due to illness.
