Herbert Abel

Herbert Abel (born March 8, 1911 in Bremen ; † June 17, 1994 ibid) was a German geographer and museum director in Bremen.

biography

Abel attended school in Bremen and studied natural sciences and geography at the University of Freiburg and the University of Frankfurt am Main . He received his doctorate in Frankfurt am Main in 1936 . He began his work at the Überseemuseum Bremen , was assistant in 1937 and head of department for ethnology and trade in 1938. After serving as a soldier in World War II , he returned in mid-1945. He was then acting head of the overseas museum and was temporarily suspended between 1946/1947 for political reasons. At the end of 1948 he was provisional director of the museum again and in 1951 he became the deputy director of the museum.

In 1952 and 1956 he made two research trips to South West Africa . From 1960 to 1975 he was President of the Wittheit Science Society in Bremen and from 1960 President of the German Africa Society . From 1968 to 1976 he was also Chairman of the Broadcasting Council of Radio Bremen .

From 1971 until his retirement in 1976 he was director of the Überseemuseum. On April 2, 1975 he was awarded the Senate Medal for Art and Science of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen .

Herbert Abel was married to Adele, b. Bavendamm. The marriage resulted in a daughter and two sons.
