Herbert B. Callen

Herbert B. Callen (born July 1, 1919 in Philadelphia , † May 22, 1993 in Merion, Pennsylvania) was an American theoretical physicist . He is known in the USA for his textbook on thermodynamics, published in 1960.

Life

Herbert Callen graduated from Temple University and received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . During World War II he worked on the Manhattan Project . From 1948 he was at the University of Pennsylvania , where he became a professor in 1956. In 1951, he and Theodore Welton proved the fluctuation-dissipation theorem . 1985 Callen retired.

In 1984 Herbert Callen won the Cresson Medal from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. In 1990 he became a member of the National Academy of Sciences . Callen was married and had a son and a daughter.
