Herbert Derwein , until 1926 Herbert Levin , (born April 6, 1893 in Braunschweig , † January 13, 1961 in Heidelberg ) was a German historian and city ​​archivist for the city of Heidelberg.

Life

Herbert Levin lost his hearing when he was 14 years old as a result of scarlet fever . He studied at the universities of Leipzig, Göttingen and Gießen, where he received his doctorate in 1916. phil. received his doctorate. Due to an invitation to tender from the Suevia Heidelberg Foundation of the University of Heidelberg, which called for a competition on Romanticism in Heidelberg in 1917, he moved to Heidelberg and won the competition with his book Die Heidelberger Romantik (1922). Levin, who changed his family name to Derwein in 1926 , initially earned his living as a bank clerk and published on topics from Baden's regional and local history. He worked semi-officially for the Palatinate Museum . In 1939 he became head of the Baden field names committee. From 1941 to 1958 Derwein was the city archivist in Heidelberg.

In 1919 he married the actress and author Irma von Drygalski (1892-1953), with whom he had three children. In his second marriage he married Gertrud Bergmann as a widower .
