Herbert Engemann

Herbert Engemann (born November 26, 1923 in Hindenburg , Upper Silesia , † September 30, 2016 in Calden ) was a German educator, historian and author.

Life

After graduation, war effort and Soviet prisoner of war , Herbert Engemann studied in Göttingen Latin and history and received his doctorate at Hermann Heimpel Dr. phil.

After completing his legal traineeship in Dortmund , he became a teacher at the Marianum high school in Warburg in 1958 . In 1974 he became head of the Brakel municipal grammar school (from 1982 Petrus Legge grammar school). In both Warburg and Brakel he devoted himself to researching local history.

Herbert Engemann was married and had five children.

Public work

During the Warburg years, Engemann carried out archaeological excavations with students on Burgberg and Desenberg . During his time in Brakel he also devoted himself to researching the history of the city. He was the initiator of the book on the city anniversary of 975 years Brakel in 1979. One focus of his research was the coming to terms with the Nazi era, especially the history of the Jewish community in Brakel. In 1992 his publication appeared on the shooting scene in Brakel. He was the driving force behind the establishment and design of the city museum in 1997. In 1998, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, the Heimat- und Museumsverein published a commemorative publication.

The motive of his voluntary commitment to the city's history was based not only on scientific interests, but also on the basis of respect for the fate of the Jewish inhabitants as members of a religious minority.

Awards

In 1992, Engemann received the Brakel Medal of Merit for his services. In 1998 he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . In 2009 he became an honorary member of the Brakel Civic and Rifle Club.
