Herbert Falk (Pharmacist)

Herbert Falk (born July 20, 1924 in Müllheim ; † August 8, 2008 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German pharmaceutical entrepreneur.

Life

Herbert Falk's father ran a pharmacy in Müllheim, where Falk attended school up to fifth grade. The family then moved to Freiburg, where his father opened his own pharmacy. Herbert Falk attended the Rotteck-Gymnasium , where he received his Abitur in March 1942. During the Second World War, he took part in the North African campaign as a medical soldier, during which he was taken prisoner by the US. He spent his last year in captivity in England.

Herbert Falk studied and did his doctorate in pharmacy at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and then worked as a self-employed pharmacist . In addition to the independent development of drugs, he studied and earned his doctorate in medicine . In 1960 he founded Falk Pharma GmbH in Freiburg im Breisgau, which specialized in particular in drugs and drugs for the treatment of diseases of the liver and the digestive tract.

Falk was friends with experts from the field of gastroenterology and hepatology and was the initiator of the “International Falk Symposia” and the “Falk Foundation”. In the 1960s he published a free, regular literature service with abstracts from the field of hepatology. Among other things, he was an honorary member of the North German Society for Gastroenterology (1998) and an honorary member of the German Society for Digestive and Metabolic Diseases. In 2004 he received the Lifetime Distinguished Service Award from the American Gastroenterology Association for outstanding lifetime achievement. He was also an honorary senator of the University of Freiburg.

Falk was a passionate hiker in his spare time and has published several hiking guides for the area around Freiburg and the southern Black Forest.
