Herbert Gabriel (life dates unknown) is or was a German football player.

Career

Gabriel moved from Arminia Leipzig to VfB Leipzig on August 21, 1936 , for which he was still employed in the current 1935/36 season and in the Gauliga Sachsen until 1944 , in one of 16, later increased to 23 Gauligen at the time of National Socialism as the uniform highest division in the German Reich , was used. The last season before the end of World War II he played in season 1 of the Leipzig group , as one of four groups, the now divided Gauliga Sachsen. The best result was second place at the end of the 1938/39 season , one point behind Dresdner SC .

After VfB Leipzig was dissolved and expropriated by the Soviet occupying power in 1945, like all civil clubs, former VfB players founded the “SG Probstheida”, to which Gabriel belonged until 1947, on their old sports grounds.

While he was a member of the club, he and his team took part in the competition for the Tschammerpokal , the cup competition for club teams introduced in 1935. In 1936 he played only one game, namely the final, which was only played on January 3, 1937 in the Berlin Olympic Stadium, against last year's finalists FC Schalke 04 , with Fritz Szepan and Ernst Kuzorra in their ranks. With VfB Leipzig he emerged as the winner of this encounter with 2-1, not least with his goal to make it 2-0 in the 31st minute. His teammate Jakob May scored the 1-0 in the 20th minute; the Schalke Ernst Kalwitzki's goal in the 42nd minute was the only one in the remaining 48 minutes.
