Herbert Grünewald (born September 12, 1921 in Weinheim ; † July 14, 2002 in Kreuztal-Eichen ) was a German chemist and from 1974 to 1984 CEO of Bayer AG in Leverkusen .

Life

Grünewald was born in 1921 as the son of a businessman and graduated from high school in Frankfurt (Main) in 1940 , where he also began studying chemistry. In the meantime he was served in the Second World War and was taken prisoner .

After his release in 1949 he was able to continue his studies and graduate with a diploma in 1951. In 1956 he received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg and joined the “Intermediates” department at Bayer AG . In 1960 he was appointed head of the department, and in 1965 he was promoted to department director.

In 1968 he was appointed to the board and also took over the area of ​​personnel and social affairs. In 1974 he was appointed CEO after Kurt Hansen , which gave him the task of leading the company through the time of the oil crisis. In 1975 he was awarded an honorary professorship at the University of Bonn , where he became honorary senator in 1988.

Grünewald used his time as CEO until 1984 to expand Bayer's business abroad, particularly in the US pharmaceuticals market.

In 1984, after handing over the position of CEO to Hermann J. Strenger, he became Chairman of the Supervisory Board. In 1992 he retired and was elected honorary board member of Bayer AG in 2002, an office that he also held at TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen from 1984 onwards . Since 1988 he has been an honorary member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
