Herbert Hellmann

Herbert Hellmann (born June 24, 1920 in Osnabrück ; † January 8, 1990 ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

Hellmann was born the son of an employee. After attending the Ratsgymnasium Osnabrück , he switched to a secondary school in 1933, which he completed in 1935 with the secondary school leaving certificate. He initially completed a commercial apprenticeship and, since 1938, further apprenticeship as an industrial clerk at the J. Meyer steam boiler factory in Osnabrück. In 1940 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . He took part in the Second World War as a soldier , was deployed in the Air Force during the Russian campaign and was finally made a non-commissioned officer. At the end of the war in 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets in Königsberg .

After his release from captivity, Hellmann worked as an employee at the city administration in Wilhelmshaven and at the Wilhelmshaven municipal utilities. In 1959 he took up a position as authorized signatory at Wilhelmshavener Schifffahrtsgesellschaft Jade mbH . He was also involved in the AWO .

Hellmann was married and had two children.

politics

Hellmann joined the SPD in October 1945 and was later elected to the board of directors of the SPD district of Weser-Ems . From May 6, 1959 to June 20, 1978 he was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament (4th to 8th electoral term) and from January 6, 1965 to June 5, 1967 chairman of the baths subcommittee.

Hellmann was appointed Minister for Federal Affairs, Displaced Persons and Refugees from July 5, 1967 to July 8, 1970 in the government of Lower Saxony led by Prime Minister Georg Diederichs . After the dissolution of the Ministry of Expellees, he served as Minister for Federal Affairs from July 8, 1970 to February 6, 1976 in the subsequent government headed by Prime Minister Alfred Kubel .

Later he was honorary chairman of the SPD Wilhelmshaven.

Hellmann worked as a member of the control committee at the Federal Equalization Office, member of the board of trustees of the Max Planck Institute for Cell Biology Wilhelmshaven, member of the Broadcasting Council of Deutschlandfunk, member of the administrative board of the burden equalization bank in Bad Godesberg, member of the board of the Friedlandhilfe e. V., board member of the Friends of the University of Applied Sciences Wilhelmshaven in the business department and member of the general advisory board of the Norddeutsche Landesbank.

Honors

In 1975 Hellmann was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit.
