Krenchels Krenit bowls

Herbert Krenchel (born April 16, 1922 in Frederiksberg ; † April 28, 2014 in Hellerup ) was a Danish materials researcher and designer who was mainly known for his Krenit bowl series .

Life

Herbert Krenchel studied at the Technical University in Copenhagen to become a qualified engineer . In 1953 he opened his own design office.

In the same year he designed the Krenit bowl series for the Danish company Torben Ørskov & Co , with which he won a gold medal at the 1954 Milan Triennial . The bowls were formed from millimeter-thin sheet metal and coated on the outside with sand-blasted black fiber cement (asbestos-free Eternit); The name Krenit is derived from this material and the name of the designer. Inside there is a layer of enamel in strong colors. Originally designed in red, other colors were quickly used: blue, light blue, mint, green, lime green, red-orange, yellow, white and black. The bowls set the style for the industrial production of household items and were typical of the simple Scandinavian product design . Today they are coveted collector's items. With the triumph of plastics , Krenit production was stopped in 1966. A new edition has been available in stores since 2010 .

In the mid-1950s Herbert Krenchel designed salad servers made of melamine and frying pans made of enamelled sheet steel in different sizes, each size having its own color; the bakelite handle was removable so you could put the pan straight from the stove on the dining table.

Since 2008 Normann Copenhagen has been producing a new Krenchels design, "Krenit Melamin", a plastic salad bowl in white or black.

Herbert Krenchel's design products have always been characterized by their high quality and are a good example of the Svenska Slöjdföreningen vakrare vardagsvara (prettier everyday object ) slogan .
