Herbert Mehrtens

Herbert Mehrtens (born May 5, 1946 in Bremen ) is a German science and mathematics historian .

Life

Mehrtens studied mathematics at the University of Hamburg , where he obtained his diploma in 1974 and his doctorate in 1977. He then worked from 1977 to 1982 as an assistant at the TU Berlin . He then conducted research in various projects at the Technical University of Berlin and went through phases of "scientifically productive unemployment, fellowships ...". He completed his habilitation with the study Modernism - Language - Mathematics: a history of the dispute over the foundations of the discipline and the subject of formal systems in the history of mathematics at the TU Berlin. In the academic year 1986/1987 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . Since 1992 he has been professor of modern history ( history of science and technology) at the TU Braunschweig . Mehrtens researched the history of the natural sciences under National Socialism and the history of modern mathematics, and presented numerous articles on them. Mehrtens is retired. For many years he was also a member of the editorial team of the magazine " Wechselffekt" , which dealt with topics between science, technology and society.
