Herbert Tischner

Herbert Tischner (* 1906 in Halberstadt , † 1984 in Hamburg ) was a German ethnologist .

Life

He finished school in Goslar in 1927. He studied anthropology, prehistory and geography in Frankfurt am Main and Hamburg. In 1933 he received his doctorate on house types in Oceania. Georg Thilenius , Paul Hambruch and Otto Dempwolff were important influences for him. In 1933 he took a voluntary position at the Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg. From 1936 he worked as an assistant in the Department of Oceania. Between 1941 and 1945 he took part in World War II. After his return to Hamburg he continued to work at the Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg. In 1968, Tischner became head of the Oceania Department and deputy director of the museum. He retired in 1971.
