Paul Hambruch

Paul Hambruch (born November 22, 1882 in Hamburg ; † June 25, 1933 there ) was a German ethnologist .

Hambruch grew up in Hamburg and attended the Johanneum , he studied chemistry and mathematics in Göttingen and anthropology, ethnology and geography in Berlin with Ferdinand von Richthofen and Felix von Luschan in 1907 he obtained his doctorate in Berlin on the Franz Emil collection acquired in 1904 by the Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg Hellwig .

In the following years he worked on behalf of the Jaluit Society in Nauru to help combat a coconut palm disease.

Hambruch took part in the second year of the expedition from 1909 to 1910 in the Great Hamburg South Sea Expedition organized by Georg Thilenius . He was entrusted with the ethnographic studies of Micronesia, in particular Nauru and Pohnpei . Hambruch's work is still seen as the basis for research on Pohnpei's ruined city of Nan Madol .

He then became an employee of the Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg and head of its South Seas department. Hambruch completed his habilitation in 1919/1920, from 1922 he worked as an associate professor for ethnology at the University of Hamburg .

His compilations of fairy tales from the South Seas made him known to a wider audience.
