Ners is a French commune with 702 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Alès and the municipality of Alès Agglomération .

geography

Ners is located in the Gardon Valley between Nîmes and Alès . Alès is 13 kilometers northwest of Ners.

history

The Ners area was settled before Roman times. The name Ners goes back to a Gallo-Roman citizen named Nertius. Nercium as a place name is documented in 1247 and 1384. From 1547 the place name Ners is proven.

On August 24, 1815, the Chasseurs du Gard , a regiment of hunters on horseback, came to Ners. They wanted to clear the space for the Austrian cavalry as part of a decision by the Congress of Vienna . The Chasseurs du gard were faced with a troop of insurgent, armed Nersiens who were probably part of the Verdets , royalists who in 1815 took action against Protestants in particular . When the mayor of Ners at the time, Paul Perrier, wanted to start negotiations, he was shot dead by insurgent guards. The Austrians arrived on August 25th and a fight broke out. Four Austrians were killed and nine others injured, it killed 60 insurgents and wounded and also not made prisoners in Nîmes under the command of Count of Starhemberg firing squad were.
