Martignargues ( Occitan : Martinhargues ) is a place and a municipality in the south of France with 424 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gard department in the Occitanie region .

location

The place Martignargues is located on a 90 to 110 m high hill between the Droude and Gardon (or Gard ) rivers and is about 16 km (driving distance) in a south-easterly direction from Alès . It is another 35 km to Nîmes .

The population remained roughly stable in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In recent times, its relative proximity to the cities of Nîmes un Alès has contributed to population growth.

economy

For centuries the inhabitants of Martignargues lived on the produce of their fields and gardens as self-sufficient ; Production surpluses could be marketed in Alès . Wine was also grown, but the phylloxera crisis put a temporary end to this branch of the economy at the end of the 19th century. Today only a few wines are grown and marketed through the appellations Cévennes , Duché d'Uzès , Gard and Pays d'Oc . The rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) is increasingly playing a certain role in the economic life of the municipality.

history

The area was probably inhabited as early as Gallo-Roman times . The first written mention of the place name Martiniacum colonica comes from the year 850, when the area still belonged to the area of ​​the Abbey Psalmodie. On March 14, 1704, a battle took place nearby between troops loyal to the king and the victorious rebellious camisards under Jean Cavalier .

Attractions

  • The town center ( bourg ) consists of many old quarry stone houses, but most of them were plastered.
  • The church, which originally dates back to the Middle Ages, was destroyed by the camisards in 1702, but renovated in 1730 from partly reused broken and house stones.
  • There was a Protestant church ( temple ), but it was destroyed in 1663.
  • At the edge of the vineyards there are still some guard huts made of dry masonry ( cabanes ).
