Herbord (Michelsberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herbord (* before 1145; † September 27, 1168 in Bamberg ) was a German Benedictine monk and biographer of Bishop Otto von Bamberg .

In 1146, Magister Herbord came to the Michelsberg Monastery as head of the local school . In 1158 he begins to write a description of the life of Bishop Otto von Bamberg (1102–1139). He relies on the Vitae of Ebo and Prüfening monk ( Librarian Wolfger ?). In contrast to his predecessors, however, he brings the biography into an artistically appealing form of dialogue.

A short version of Herbord's work produced shortly after 1189 by “Anonymus Canisii” found widespread use. Until 1865, Herbord's vita of the Bamberg bishop was only known from compilations, then Giesebrecht discovered Herbord's independent version in a manuscript from the 14th century.

Herbord stood in Michelsberg on the side of a reform party that sought the removal of Abbot Helmerich (1147–1160) and played a key role in bringing Irimbert from Admont to Bamberg in 1160 .
