Herbord von Bischofsroda , also Herbord von Spangenberg , latinized Herbordus de Spangenberg (* before 1344; † July 8, 1376 ) was a late medieval scholar and provost in Erfurt .

Life

Herbord's origin is not entirely clear. It is assumed that he comes from a noble family resident in Bischofroda . According to its name, its origin could also be derived from Bischofferode (Spangenberg) .

He is mentioned in a document from 1344, in 1354 he is named as provost of the Severikirche (Erfurt) ; a position he had at his own insistence from Pope Clement VI. who had previously withdrawn it from Lupold von Bebenburg . Two documents from 1362 and 1366 also identify him as a member of the chapter of St. Mary, today's Erfurt Cathedral . In 1367, he is referred to in a document as a Magister. He was also the town clerk in Erfurt.

Two documents from Herbord have come down to us from the conflict over the Sachsenspiegel . To the Dekadikon - an indictment by Johannes Klenkok - against originally 10 articles in the Sachsenspiegel, which Klenkok considered to be incompatible with church law, Herbord responded with an opposition , which in turn was followed by a replication from Klenkok. The correspondence is concluded by a duplication of Herbords. While Klenkok wrote to his former student and Curia Cardinal Pierre de Vergne after Herbord's unsuccessful objections , Herbord no longer appears in the further course of the conflict over the Sachsenspiegel.

After that it is mentioned again in a document confirming the establishment of the Carthusian monastery in Erfurt in 1375.
