The autumn maneuver is a demanding aerial combat maneuver that enables combat aircraft to change direction quickly around the yaw axis . This leads to a stall . One of the prerequisites for the maneuver is a thrust vector control .

The maneuver was first flown on April 29, 1993 with the Rockwell-MBB X-31 experimental aircraft. Various modern fighter planes with thrust vector control master the maneuver, including the F-22 Raptor . The maneuver was named in honor of Wolfgang Herbst , a German pilot and aircraft designer at Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm , who died on a private test flight while the X-31 was being developed.
