Heredium is a traditional pen & paper role-playing game set in the Dark Future genre. It takes place around the year 2200, after a number of catastrophes changed the world and only 60 million people live there. Heredium deals with the reconstruction, the construction of new structures and the departure into a better future.

background

In 2190 an explosion tore apart the surface of the moon. The explosion shoots a chunk of the moon towards Earth. The projectile passes just above the earth's atmosphere and sets the oceans in motion. The earth stumbles and gets out of its way. On the earth's surface, states and cultures are afflicted by natural disasters, so that millennia-old foundations collapse and the global community as such no longer exists. Only ten years later does the earth regain its equilibrium.

There are only five civilizations left, each one dominates most of their continent, combining technology and philosophy to form a new foundation. A largely peaceful coexistence, but it will not be long before man's nature drives him to new conquests and wars. And to make nature subject one more time. But the earth is awakening and a poisonous seed sprouts in its lap, ready to crawl to the surface, bloom, and finally destroy the parasites on its back.

The role play reflects this fictional future, the core theme of which is not the end of an age, but humanity's last chance. A new age that might be the last. The people of the 23rd century have to inherit the legacy (Latin Heredium) of their ancestors and stand against the wrath of an opponent who is incomprehensible to the human spirit - the earth itself.

system

The game mechanisms are based on simple principles and have a modular structure. This means that the basic rules are kept to an absolute minimum, but contain optional expansion proposals that players can use to customize the mechanisms to suit their style of play.

Each character has six primary attributes , which (usually) range from 1 to 4, with 2 being the human average. However, this range of values can also be exceeded through advantages and special skills. Skills or knowledge acquired are reflected in skills with values ranging from 1 to 16. In order to successfully pass an action, a predetermined target value (usually between 8 and 36) must be reached or exceeded with an action roll. To do this, a player rolls a number of six-sided dice ( D6 ) for his character , which is determined by the relevant attribute in the situation. Then he adds the appropriate skill value and other (situation-dependent) modifiers and compares the overall result with the target value. The amount of the difference between the action roll and the target value determines the degree of success / failure.

The character creation is based on a point distribution system, so that there is in principle a balance between the characters. The player determines the civilization of his character and selects a calling that locates the character within his environment and brings with it certain bonuses, starting equipment and special abilities. Special personality aspects as well as advantages and disadvantages help to give each character a multi-faceted personality before the game starts.

The fight against adverse living conditions is part of everyday life. When the going gets tough, a life point-based combat system comes into play, which can be customized through a variety of optional maneuvers. Each of the five civilizations also has unique special abilities, such as ectoware, stimulants, mutations and PSI or nanite powers. A whole range of new technologies is waiting to be used: cool suites that protect the wearer from extreme temperatures; Plasma, proton and laser weapons, for use against stubborn enemies; Brainchips that drive the wearer's brain to high performance; and much more.
