Peter Jaszczyk

Peter Gerhard Jaszczyk (born February 3, 1943 in Essen ; † August 31, 2009 in Bottrop ) was a works council chairman at Adam Opel AG .

Life

Peter Jaszczyk's father of the same name (1901–1969) was an electrician, his mother Paula Saurusaitis (1910–1982) was a seamstress. He had a younger brother. After primary school in Bottrop, he completed an apprenticeship as a fitter at Krupp in Essen in 1957 .

From 1962 he was employed by Adam Opel AG. There he was initially trained as a toolmaker . Since 1970 he has been a works council member, since 1996 works council chairman and deputy general works council chairman , executive member of the European works council of General Motors and a member of the supervisory board .

In May 1983, had secret service trying Jaszczyk as undercover agent to recruit, which he refused. At the follow-up meeting there were fights. Jaszczyk unmasked his real name on the basis of a found lottery ticket. In the following year Jaszczyk was sentenced to a fine of 6000 D-Marks for dangerous bodily harm and coercion . Due to the vote buying affair in the works council, he resigned from all offices on June 3, 2002.

Jaszczyk was a DKP member, then switched to the SPD and resigned there too. For the federal election in 1990 he ran unsuccessfully in second place on the NRW state list of the PDS / Left List.

On the occasion of the reduction of capacities and employees at Opel in the Bochum plant , he became active again as a pensioner in the interest representation of the Bochum workforce. Thomas van Zütphen described Jaszczykal in Focus in October 2004 as “a prototype of the Ruhr area, as if cast for the interests of workers”. In December 2004, Martin Teigeler and Klaus Jansen wrote in the taz : "During the strike, an unruly pensioner became a media figure."

In 2005 he joined the labor and social justice alternative (WASG). Jaszczyk was elected to the regional executive committee of the WASG in North Rhine-Westphalia. He was considered the WASG's best speaker, but left it again after a short time. The marriage to Edith Jaszczyk resulted in two daughters and a son.
