Herja

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herja is the name of a female literary figure from Nordic mythology . In the Edda she appears as the named protagonist of the Valkyries .

Snorri Sturluson lists Herja in his list of synonyms in the Skáldskaparmál of his Prose Edda . This list is in the context of his didactic conception as an aid for the poetological training of the skalds , therefore referred to as Þulur ("word series"). In Skáldskaparmál 17 Snorri Herja binds especially in Hrungnir myth and recited here Þjóðólfrs sign poem of Haustlöng in which it incorporates the name of the Herja in a composition and the figure of Hrungnir hereby identified paraphrases ( Kenning ).

"Vingnis herju heimþinguðr."

"The visitor of Vingnir's companion."

Rudolf Simek compares the name etymologically with the Old High German herjón with the meaning of something devastate or devastate and derives the form from Germanic * Harjaza . He also refers to the inscription of the name of the goddess Hariasa from the Germania inferior of the 2nd century.
