Hermína Týrlová

Hermína Týrlová (born December 11, 1900 in Březové Hory , † May 3, 1993 in Zlín , Czech Republic ) was a Czech director and animation producer .

Life

Hermína Týrlová was the founder of the Czech animated film. She began drawing film commercials with Karel Dodal in the 1920s . After the war she renewed the experiments with animated puppets ( Ferdinand, the ant ) , which had already been carried out experimentally during the Second World War. In response to the war, she shot Vzpoura hraček (Riot of the Toys), a combination of actors and puppets. This was followed by the lyrical film Ukolébavka (The Lullaby) in a similar presentation . In the years that followed she shot Pasáček vepřů (The Swineherd), Zlatovláska (The Golden-Haired One ) and modern fairy tales Pohádka o drakovi (The fairy tale of the dragon) and Vláček kolejáček with only dolls . In Ztracená panenka (Lost Doll) she let actors perform with dolls again.

Awards

Together with Ferdinand, the Ant, she created the first Czechoslovak full-length puppet film in 1942 in Zlín. Rise of the Puppets followed four years later , with which she won prizes at international festivals in Venice , Cannes and Brussels. The high point of her filmmaking was at the end of the 1950s The Knot in the Handkerchief , for which she received numerous awards, including in Cannes, Locarno and Mar del Plata .

In addition to other domestic and foreign recognitions, she received the prize for her life's work at the 1981 Paris International Film Festival .

Experimental filmmaking

She experimented with a wide variety of materials. In her work, she attached great importance to detailed and finely drawn motifs. She chose them herself and also wrote some of the scripts. She was always on the lookout for new ways of working and didn't let major problems stop her. Compared with the puppet films by Jiří Trnka and Karel Zeman, their films appeared simple and stylistically clean. The expressiveness lay in the understandability for children and the emotionality of the simple truth.
