Herman Merivale

Herman Merivale (born November 8, 1806 in Dawlish , Devon , † February 8, 1874 ) was an English civil servant and also active as an author. He was the older brother of Charles Merivale and father of the poet Herman Charles Merivale .

He was born in Dawlish , Devonshire. He attended Harrow School. From 1823 he attended Oriel College , Oxford . In 1825 he became a student at Trinity College and won the Irish scholarship. Three years later he was selected by Balliol College . He became a member of the Inner Temple and practiced in the western district.

From 1837 to 1842 he was Professor of Economics at Oxford University . In 1859 he was appointed "permanent under-secretary" at the India Office . In 1870 Merivale became DCL of Oxford.
