Herman Jean Joseph Richir (born December 4, 1866 in Ixelles ; † March 15, 1942 in Uccle ) was a Belgian genre, nude and portrait painter and art teacher.

Herman Richir studied at the Art Academy in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode / Sint-Joost-ten-Node in Gustave Biot and Charles Hermans and continued his studies in 1884 at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Jean-François Portaels continued .

As early as 1885 he was awarded the Academy Prize. In 1886, Richir finished second behind Constant Montald at the Belgian Prix de Rome . In 1889 he received a gold medal at the three-yearly fair in Ghent . He exhibited his works in the Paris salons in 1889 and 1892 and at the Brussels World's Fair in 1897 .

In 1900, Herman Richir was appointed professor for the drawing course in nature at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles . From 1905 to 1927 he worked there as a professor of painting. Among his students were two important members of the Nervia group, Louis Buisseret and Léon Navez.

During his teaching activities, he was director of the Academy several times from 1906 to 1927 (1906–1907, 1910–1911, 1915–1919 and 1925–1927). In 1927 he finally left his position as director and was replaced by Victor Horta .
