Hermann Anselment
Hermann Anselment (born May 13, 1905 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † July 5, 1981 in Liestal ) was a German expressionist painter .
Life
After graduating from high school in 1923, Anselment initially trained as a flat painter, then studied music (cello) and at the same time enrolled at the university drawing school in his hometown. A stay in Berlin ended in 1933 because he was banned from exhibiting by the National Socialists as a “ degenerate artist ”. This was followed by further studies in Freiburg im Breisgau with Hermann Gehri and in Basel at the arts and crafts school with Arnold Fiechter . From 1939 to 1945 he did military service.
From 1948 to 1955 Anselment was a lecturer in color and form at the Nuremberg Art Academy . In 1954 the painter moved to Liestal (Switzerland), where he acquired citizenship and died on July 5, 1981. From 1956 to 1963 he ran a private painting school in Freiburg, from 1959 a second one in Liestal. He was with Maria Frieda Lambertz; and married in second marriage to Elsy de Smit (1919–1981) from Basel.

The comprehensive, expressive work includes numerous portraits of women in intense colors, flowers and still lifes, but also landscapes that clearly show a close proximity to contemporaries such as Gabriele Münter or Wassily Kandinsky and Expressionism, both in terms of the choice of color and the reduction of form. In the flowing movements you can see the great love for music, which also shaped his painting.
