Hermann Böttcher (philologist)

Hermann Constantin Böttcher (born July 28, 1846 in Langeln am Harz, † October 21, 1925 in Clausthal-Zellerfeld ) was a German philologist, high school professor and historian.

Life

Hermann Constantin Böttcher was born on July 28, 1846 in Langeln am Harz as the son of Langeln surgeon Friedrich Böttcher and his wife Louise. With the certificate of maturity, Hermann Böttcher graduated from the Royal Cathedral High School in Halberstadt in 1867 . From 1867 to 1870 he studied philology in Göttingen and in the meantime in Berlin . After a probationary year as a teacher at the Archigymnasium Soest , he took up a position as a scientific assistant teacher at the Halberstädter Domgymnasium on October 1, 1871. In April 1872 he received his doctorate from the University of Rostock. phil., the subject of his doctoral thesis was: "About the sources of Cassius Dio in his account of the civil war between Caesar and Pompey."

In August 1873, Böttcher took his extension exam in Göttingen and in October was given a permanent position at the Domgymnasium. From November 1887 his official position was senior teacher and on March 16, 1893 he was appointed professor. On April 1, 1909, Böttcher left the grammar school and retired.

Hermann Böttcher had been with his wife Agnes Amalie Marie, born in July 1873. Struve, married. The only child they had was Elisabeth Agnes Luise Clara Böttcher on August 25, 1881. After the death of his wife, Böttcher left Halberstadt and spent the last months of his life in Clausthal with his daughter, where he died on October 21, 1925.
