Hermann Backhaus (electrical engineer)

Hermann Emil Wilhelm Backhaus (born September 10, 1885 in Berlin ; † February 2, 1958 in Brühl ) was a German electrical engineer. From 1951 to 1952 he was rector of the Technical University of Karlsruhe .

Life

Backhaus was the son of the Berlin master mason Hermann Backhaus and his wife Elisabeth nee Große. After attending grammar schools in Berlin and Cologne , he successfully passed his school-leaving exams in 1904. He then studied at the University and the Technical University of Berlin until 1909. From 1909 to 1920 he was an officer in the military and took part in the First World War. His last rank was captain. He then worked as an engineer at the Siemens-Schuckert and received his doctorate in 1923 at the University of Jena to Dr. phil. The topic of his dissertation was about sieve chains and their connection to lines .

In 1928 Hermann Backhaus qualified as a private lecturer in applied physics at the University of Greifswald . In 1932 he was appointed full professor at the Technical University in Karlsruhe. In 1951 he became the rector of this university.

family

On January 2, 1920, Hermann Backhaus married Dorothea nee Ottmann (* 1895), the daughter of the Ministerial Director Ernst Ottmann from Poznan. The two sons Hermann (* 1921) and Peter (* 1930) emerged from their marriage.
