Friedrich Hermann Behr (* 1792 in Freiberg ; † December 13, 1848 in New York City ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Live and act

The second son of Johann Bernhard Behr (1754-1827), pastor at the Jakobikirche in Freiberg, studied Protestant theology after attending grammar school in Freiberg . In 1819 he was appointed as a substitute for his father, who had been transferred to the Erzgebirge city of Schwarzenberg in 1804 . After his retirement in 1827, he took over the pastoral position entirely. As a deputy member of the 12th urban constituency, Behr was a member of the second chamber of the first constitutional Saxon state parliament , which took place in 1833/34 .

In order to counter the increasing poverty in the Ore Mountains with the decline of the iron industry, Behr supported the emigration of impoverished families to America. For his vision of a Saxon colony on the west coast of Florida , in 1831/32 he suggested the establishment of an emigration and colonization company financed by the issue of shares and state subsidies , which was supposed to enable the emigration of 2000 impoverished people. In January 1847, Behr was given leave of absence from his church service in order to found an Erzgebirge colony in North America. In 1847/48 closed communities left Saxony, and in particular the Schwarzenberg area, and settled in eastern Tennessee . He published collected letters from colonists in Wartburg (Tennessee) in 1848 with the aim of providing a guide to those wishing to emigrate. After the gloomy experiences in America and disappointed in his expectations, he died of cholera in December of that year on his return trip to Europe in New York.

His brother Johann Heinrich August von Behr (1793–1871) was a politician who u. a. served as finance and justice minister of the Kingdom of Saxony.
