Hermann Butterweck (born February 8, 1816 in Kassel  , † January 28, 1898 in Darmstadt ) was a German dancer and theater actor .

Life

Butterweck, the son of a foreman, came to the court theater of his hometown as a choirboy when he was four. At that time Ludwig Spohr was Kapellmeister there, who caught his eye and gave him lessons. Because he was extremely agile, he was to become a ballet dancer and made his debut on February 13, 1831 as such.

After the dissolution of the Kassel court theater, he went to Bremen, where, in addition to ballet, he was also used in small roles in drama. But Karl Seydelmann advised him to act.

Butterweck did not give up the dance straight away, and even later took up a position as a solo dancer at the newly established theater in Kassel, but decided in 1836 to give up dance completely and only deal with acting.

From 1837 to 1838 he worked as a comedian at the Stadttheater in Bremen, from 1838 to 1840 at the Steinstrasse Theater in Hamburg, 1841 in Copenhagen then in Lübeck and Kiel, 1843 to 1844 in Dessau, then returned to Bremen, worked in 1845 in Wiesbaden, from 1846 to 1848 in Mainz, from 1848 to 1850 in Riga, worked at the Hoftheater in Dresden from 1851 to 1853, became a member of the Riga City Theater for a second time, followed a call to Amsterdam in 1856 until it finally found solid ground in 1857 and became a member of the court theater in Darmstadt and stayed there until his retirement in 1888. From time to time he granted guest requests which took him to various major theaters in Germany, Russia, Holland, Austria and Hungary. When he retired, he was made an honorary member of the Court Theater.

His brother was the actor Konrad Butterweck .
