Hermann Finck (born March 21, 1527 in Pirna , † December 28, 1558 in Wittenberg ) was a German music theorist , composer and organist .

Life

Hermann Finck was Heinrich Finck's great-nephew . After initial musical training, Hermann Finck was a member of the court orchestra of the King of Hungary and Bohemia Ferdinand I. In 1545 he enrolled as a student at the University of Wittenberg , where he taught singing and instrumental music from 1554. In 1557 he became a university organist. He gave lectures on Ars musica among the university's educational institutions , and in 1555 published a wedding song with 5 voices and a funeral song with 4 parts in the publishing house of Georg Rhau's heirs . He had thus significantly influenced Melanchthon's music theory.

In 1556 his main work " Practica Musica Hermann Finckii, Exempla variorum signorum proportionum et canonum, Judicium de tonis, ac quaedam de Arte suaviter et et artificiose cantandi continens " was published, which contains remarkable information on the musical conditions at that time. After Finck had written a song on Sigismund von Brandenburg in 1558 , he died at the age of 31 as a respected personality in Wittenberg, where he had held an organist position at the Wittenberg Castle Church .
