Hermann Franz (born October 10, 1841 in Worms , † November 7, 1908 in Weimar , Thuringia) was a German hiking instructor and association secretary in Thuringia .

Life

Franz received his specialist training at the Agricultural Academy from Dr. Heinrich Konrad Schneider in Worms and then worked as a hiking instructor in the Rheinhessen region . In 1870 he was appointed to Weimar and on June 1, 1872, he was awarded the title of secretary as managing director of the agricultural central office for the Grand Duchy of Saxony . In this committee, which was formed in 1865, Franz was responsible for coordinating the educational work in the main agricultural associations of the five administrative districts, for preparing legal regulations and for reporting.

At the same time, from June 1872, he took over the editing of the Landwithschaftliche Zeitung for Thuringia , which had been published since 1863 , the title of which changed several times, from 1887 was called the Thuringian agricultural newspaper and as a practical weekly for Central German agriculture. Organ of the agricultural central office for the Grand Duchy of Saxony and association newspaper for the agricultural associations in the Thuringian territories appeared. In addition to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar, Franz also included the other Thuringian territories in his activities. This was particularly evident in the two writings on the development of agriculture in Thuringia, which are still reference works today. With a thesis on the potato he was in 1873 at the University of Goettingen to the Dr. phil. PhD.

In the 30 years of his activity from 1870 onwards, Franz organized around 1200 meetings and gave over 2000 lectures. He also worked as an animal breeding inspector for the breed clubs in two administrative districts. Because of an eye ailment, he had to submit a request for dismissal and was retired on April 1, 1901 with the title of Landes-Oekonomierat . Previously, he was from 1872 economy commissioner and from 1898 Oekonomierat . On November 7, 1908, Franz died of a stroke. His grave is still preserved in the historic cemetery in Weimar. The Society for the History and Literature of Agriculture donated a commemorative plaque to Hermann Franz's last house.

The Agricultural Central Office developed into the Chamber of Agriculture for the Grand Duchy of Saxony in 1909, for Saxony-Weimar in 1918 and the Thuringian Main Chamber of Agriculture in 1925/26.
