Hermann II (Bamberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann II († June 12, 1177 (according to other information: July 12, 1177) probably in Pomposa or Brondolo ) was bishop of Bamberg from 1170 to 1177 .

Life

He continued his seven-year episcopate in the same way as his predecessors. In 1174 he confirmed the ownership of the Benedictine monastery of St. Maria and Theodor , founded in 1157 , including a mill with four wheels. Hermann II transferred the bailiwick of the Bamberg possessions Feldkirchen and Dietrichstein in Carinthia to Duke Hermann II of Carinthia in 1176 .

In 1177, Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa asked the bishop to accompany him on his Italian expedition. With this the peace between the emperor and Pope Alexander III. (1159–1181) sealed by the Treaty of Venice of July 24, 1177. Bishop Hermann did not live to see the signing of the contract because he died a few weeks earlier in Italy. His body was first in the St. Mark's Basilica of Venice buried and later to Bamberg in the monastery of St. Theodore transferred.
