He was the son of Georg Friedrich Kersting and his wife Agnes (née Sergel). He received his first artistic training from his father. He then attended the Dresden Art Academy , where he was first a student of Eduard Bendemann and later of Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld . Originally he tended towards landscape painting , so his father also depicted the 18-year-old as a landscape painter with a portfolio, palette and folding stool in the great outdoors. But under the influence of Bendemann in particular, who belonged to the Düsseldorf School of Painting , he turned to history painting .

His brother had settled in Meissen as a doctor. However, he died in 1844. The father died only a few years after July 1st, 1847. The painter Ludwig Richter was a family friend.

Works (selection)

Due to his early death from a lung disease at the age of 25, his talent could hardly develop.

One of his few works shows Johann Tetzel how he is plundered by a knight, to whom he had previously sold a valid letter of indulgence for a sin still to be committed.

Another work is a watercolor that shows two young women looking over a parapet.
