Live and act

Hermann Klugkist came from a renowned family of farmers. He completed an apprenticeship on his parents' farm and attended an agricultural school in the north . He studied for a semester in Hildesheim and in 1927 passed the secondary school leaving examination with the title of "state-certified farmer" at the Albert Thaer seminar in Celle . He then worked for several years on his parents' farm in Georgsheil and in a large company in Silesia. In 1935 he was appointed sworn agricultural expert for the region of the state tax office Weser-Ems and a little later also an official mineral appraiser.

Klugkist married Theda Marie Lindena in 1939 and was drafted into military service in the same year. He then worked as a district councilor in the administration of occupied eastern regions. The British military authorities released him in 1946. He then ran his parents' farm and chose Holstein-Friesian for his high-performance herd . He was one of the first farmers in East Frisia to consciously choose these cattle.

In the years that followed, Klugkist worked on a voluntary basis to improve the cattle industry in East Frisia holistically. In 1947 he was appointed to the board of directors of the Ostfriesischer Stammtierzchter association, in which he tried, against bitter reservations, to introduce artificial insemination, especially for black and white cattle. When the cattle insemination institute was founded in Georgsheil in 1948, Klugkist was appointed its chairman.

In addition to his commitment to cattle breeding, from 1950 Klugkist became an expert assessor at the Auricht Regional Court and the Oldenburg Higher Regional Court. He was a member of the board of directors of the Aurich Viehverwertungsgenossenschaft and worked as an expert and later Vice President of the Weser-Ems Chamber of Agriculture. In addition to numerous other offices, he was involved as a district farmer in the Aurich district from 1962 to 1974 and represented the farmers in supraregional organizations in his offices. With his work he made animal breeding in the region world-wide.

Klugkist always refused public awards. When he was supposed to receive the Federal Cross of Merit on January 10, 1973, he did not accept it, also because he believed that he had only acted dutifully.
