Hermann Ludwig Schmid (born June 26, 1908 in Augsburg-Göggingen , † April 16, 1956 in Würzburg ) was a German mathematician who dealt with algebra and algebraic number theory .

life and work

Schmid studied at the University of Munich from 1927 to 1932 , where he passed the teaching examinations. Then he was a high school teacher and received his doctorate in 1934 under Helmut Hasse at the University of Marburg ( on the reciprocity law in relatively cyclic algebraic function fields with finite constant fields ). 1935 to 1937 assistant to Hasse in Göttingen. After his habilitation in 1939 at the University of Giessen (habilitation thesis: On the Meromorphism Theory of Elliptical Functional Bodies ) he became a private lecturer at the University of Berlin (now Humboldt University in Berlin) in 1940 , where he became a professor in 1946. From 1947 to 1953 he was editor of the Zentralblatt für Mathematik , after having been part of the editorial team under the direction of Harald Geppert since 1938 . He secured their existence through many inquiries from former speakers all over the world.

Schmid also played a major role in the rebuilding of mathematics after the Second World War in Berlin (East), where he founded Mathematische Nachrichten in 1947 and was its secretary and co-editor until 1956, and was instrumental in founding an institute for pure mathematics at the German Academy was involved in the sciences, which he directed from 1947 to 1953. He made sure that leading mathematicians like Helmut Hasse u. a. came to Berlin and he also won Erhard Schmidt to work in the management of the Research Institute for Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences after his retirement (Schmidt, Hasse and Georg Hamel were on the board of directors). In 1953 he went to the University of Würzburg as a professor , where he became dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in 1954 and rector in 1955/56.

Hermann Ludwig Schmid wrote the mathematical dictionary together with Josef Naas : including theoretical physics (Akademie-Verlag, Berlin 1961 in 2 volumes).

He should not be confused with the mathematician Hermann Schmidt (1902-1993), who was also a professor (and his colleague) in Würzburg.
