approach
In his scientific work, Hermann Josef Pottmeyer deals significantly with the processing of the results of the Second Vatican Council . He assumes that the potential of this central ecclesiastical event of the 20th century has not yet been fully developed or that it needs to be continued. The conception of the Pope's ministry within the Church plays a central role ("The Petrine ministry will only gain its true dimension, a service to the communion of all churches and Christians, when its conception is no longer determined by pre-conciliar ecclesiology" ) as well as the right interpretation of the “hierarchical” constitution of the Church and the role of the laity in it.
One of Pottmeyer's main scientific merits is the edition of the “Handbuch der Fundamentaltheologie” together with Walter Kern and Max Seckler , which became the standard work of this scientific discipline in German and - in translation - in Italian.
