Life and accomplishments

Rabl-Rückhard studied from 1858 to 1862 at the Medical and Surgical Friedrich Wilhelm Institute and after completing his doctorate accepted a position as a junior doctor at the Charité . He served in the wars of 1864 , 1866 and 1870/71 and earned the iron cross at the last . After he had turned down an offer as a teacher at the Medical Academy in Tokyo , he began in 1875 a position as assistant and curator at the University Institute for Anatomy in Berlin under Karl Bogislaus Reichert . In 1882 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer in anatomy and was appointed professor in 1884. In 1892 he resigned from military service for health reasons, after having been senior staff doctor at the military gymnastics institute and a member of the military medical examination commission.

His scientific work was shaped by the work of Reichert. In particular, Rabl-Rückhard dealt with the research and development of the brain of bony fish . His hypothesis , in which association connections are established and interrupted by amoeboid movement of the dendrites, was also widely received. On September 17, 1891 , he was accepted into the Leopoldina .
