Hermann Renzel

Hermann Renzel OSB (* May 8, 1846 in Rhede ; † May 9, 1922 in Siegburg ) was a Benedictine and from 1896 to 1918 abbot of Merkelbeek Abbey .

Life

After the early death of his parents, Hermann Renzel was raised by relatives. In 1861 he entered the Benedictine monastery of Dendermonde , was sent to the Subiaco Abbey for training in 1863 and stayed in Rome to study . He was ordained a priest in 1870 and received his doctorate in theology in 1873.

Afterwards he was novice master in the Abbey of Affligem in Belgium for twenty years , until in 1893 he was appointed superior of the new Merkelbeek foundation in the Netherlands. In 1896 he was unanimously elected abbot there. During his tenure, the monasteries Kornelimünster (1906) and Siegburg (1914) were founded. In 1918 Renzel resigned from office and retired to Siegburg, where he died in 1922. He is buried there too.
