Hermann Südfeld

Hermann Südfeld (born April 3, 1879 - † June 6, 1950 ) was a German farmer . He was posthumously because of the 1965 rescue of Jews as a Righteous Among the Nations award.

Life

Hermann Südfeld was a farmer in Südkirchen on the farm of the same name ( 51 ° 42 ′  N , 7 ° 32 ′  E ). The family was Roman Catholic . He was married to Franziska Niehoff (1885–1950).

In 1944, daughter Maria hid the Jewish woman Marga Spiegel and her daughter Karin (* 1938) several times on the farm of her parents , whereby they often had to change hiding places and also found accommodation with other farming families in the Münsterland . They had the code name "Krone". Marga Spiegel suspected that Maria had told her mother about the knowledge of the father, she does not write anything.

Marga Spiegel and her husband Siegmund, who had also survived the Holocaust , made an early effort to ensure that the merits of their rescuers were recognized.

Hermann Südfeld was named “Righteous Among the Nations” by the Yad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem in 1965. At the same time, other farmers who had helped the family received this award. These were Heinrich Aschoff , Hubert Pentrop , Heinrich Silkenbömer and Bernhard Sickmann .

Trivia

Hermann Südfeld is run by Yad Vashem as "Bernhard Südfeld". But he was baptized as Hermann Antonius, married as Hermann and was named by Marga Spiegel in her book "Hermann Südfeld".
