The Markneukirchen- based company Hermann Schmidt Metallblasinstrumenten ( HSM for short ) is one of the few surviving traditional instrument makers in the Vogtland that continues to manufacture musical instruments by hand to this day . According to the company, it was founded in 1978 by Hermann Schmidt as a pure repair shop for brass instruments . Schmidt's ancestors moved from Franconia to Vogtland in 1896 as mouthpiece makers.
The product range includes trumpets , flugelhorns , cornets , trombones , hunting horns , tenor horns , baritones and tubes .
HSM made a decisive contribution to the development of a modern ophicle in 2002/03 .
In 2011, HSM received the German Musical Instrument Prize for a bass trumpet in C. For the development of a double tuba that combines a bass tuba in F and a double bass tuba in B in a professional instrument, HSM received funding of around 27,000 euros from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology in 2011.
