Hermann Sonnet (born October 5, 1881 in Pforzheim ; died July 30, 1936 in Heidelberg ) was a German composer and choir director .

Live and act

Hermann Sonnet was born the son of an innkeeper in Pforzheim. Even as a child he showed a pronounced musical talent. As a music student at the Karlsruhe Conservatory, he was commissioned to compose the festival march for the fiftieth anniversary of Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden 's accession to power. The festival march entitled “Baden's Star” earned him a multi-year scholarship.

His later professional career took Hermann Sonnet to Ulm and Göttingen as Kapellmeister before he settled back in Pforzheim. Here he created numerous choral works that were based on the tradition of German folk song. Some like "Christmas bells", "In the blooming world" or "Greet me the vines, Father Rhine" are still part of the repertoire of many choirs and choral societies in German-speaking countries.

Hermann Sonnet is buried in the main cemetery in Pforzheim .
